About AWCEG

This page is under development

The Evidence-Based Interventions Wales (EBIW) programme is an initiative led by the All-Wales Clinical Effectiveness Group, supported by Health Technology Wales (HTW) and the Clinical Implementation Networks (CINs).

The aim of the group is to ensure that a national approach to quality improvement takes place, that best practice is spread across the healthcare system and ensures equity of access to evidence-based procedures.

Removing access to inappropriate or unnecessary interventions will free up valuable resources which can be put to better use in NHS Wales. It may also allow those on the waiting list for evidence-based procedures to be treated more rapidly that they would otherwise. This is more important than ever as NHS Wales recovers from the impact of the pandemic and restores services.

We also know that sometimes these interventions can do more harm than good. We want to ensure that we restrict procedures that have poor supportive evidence and a greater chance of causing harm to patients. However, we also want to ensure our recommendations do not cause more harm and hardship to patients. We accept that whilst improving quality will generally save money it is likely in many instances to also mean more money is required.

Health Technology Wales

Health Technology Wales (HTW) is a national body working to improve the quality of care in Wales. They collaborate with partners across health, social care, and the technology sectors to ensure an all-Wales approach. They are funded by Welsh Government and hosted within NHS Wales, but independent of both.

HTW’s remit covers any technology or model of care and support in health and social care that isn’t a medicine. For health, this could include medical devices, diagnostics, procedures, and psychological therapies. For social care, this could include equipment, or different models for supporting families, children, adults, and the workforce.
